Where Denver Cases Are Heard
Denver is Colorado's Second Judicial District, and it is the only one of the state's 23 judicial districts that is not a combined court. Denver has four constitutionally separate courts: County Court, District Court, Probate Court and Juvenile Court, and the Denver District Court is aided by the Denver Probate Court and Denver Juvenile Court, an arrangement unique to Denver.
Which courthouse hears a Denver case depends on the kind of case. District Court civil and domestic cases, County Court traffic and civil cases, and the Probate Court are at the City and County Building, 1437 Bannock Street, Denver, CO 80202, where the District Court Clerk's Office is in Room 256. Criminal cases, District and County alike, and all Juvenile Court cases are heard at the Lindsey-Flanigan Courthouse, 520 West Colfax Avenue, Denver, CO 80204, where the District Court Clerk's Office is in Room 135.
Denver County Court is both a municipal and a state court and is one of the busiest courts in Colorado, processing on average 100,000 cases annually. It hears municipal criminal, traffic, and juvenile cases along with state misdemeanors, felony advisements, bond setting and preliminary hearings, civil cases not exceeding $25,000, small claims, protection orders, and state traffic violations. It is also run differently from the rest of the state's county courts: Colorado's county courts are funded by the state with the exception of Denver County Court, and its judges are appointed and retained under the Denver city charter rather than the state's process.
What We Handle in Denver
Our Criminal Defense practice covers Denver cases from DUI and driving offenses through serious felonies, and our Municipal Offenses practice covers the ordinance cases that Denver County Court hears. Our Family Law practice covers divorce, parenting time, child support, and protection orders for Denver families. Cases that start with a summons, an arrest, or papers served at home all raise the same first questions, and a first phone call answers most of them. Divorce work is billed hourly, and how your fee works is explained up front.
